Do you own a website? Do you have a blog? What if you want to update it with at least one article a day? Can you handle it?

Well, not everyone could. As much as I wanted to, I can’t…with all the projects I’m working on (I have three other sites aside from this one). You have to come up with new stuffs to talk about and squeeze out that creative juice at least a little further.

Getting Your Website Content

Determine what you want to talk about in your website. Write the topics that immediately come out on your mind. Brainstorm on ideas.

If you can’t think of anything at all, then it’s time to approach good ol’ Google. Search your topic.

Still missing something? Try Amazon.com or Magazine.com and browse for ideas on your topic. Go to your local library and look for books about your topic. Take note of the title, extract its table of contents, and if possible read some of its chapters. This knowledge will help you a lot in the future.

I have my list of topics for my website..now what?

If you are done with your list, narrow it down to a specific niche. Niche that you are more interested about and with less competition. The more niched, the better.

Focus!

You will be able to properly target your market much better and Google will like your website more if you are focused on a very specific niche topic.

After narrowing your list down, sort the topics out in order of relevancy. Only focus on those that are most relevant to your website’s theme. In the future, you might want to add some recent topics concerning your site – new products or news.

I narrowed my list down...what's next?

Now that you have an organized list, take a topic each day (depending on your posting frequency) and start writing about it.

Don’t have anything to write? It doesn’t matter. Just write! Believe me, it will come naturally. Learn to relax. Let your creative side do the writing.

If possible, create an outline first. But after that you have to just write it all out. It may not be as perfect as you want it to be and you may have to rewrite it again and again but the end point is, you finished it. You took action. And you will get better in due time.

What about keywords?

Keywords don’t really matter that much. If you write a very good article, you don’t have to worry about keyword density. But it doesn’t hurt either if you injected some keywords you want to rank highly on. Most of the time, I include my keywords or key phrase on the title, introduction and conclusion of my post.

Also make sure that you do your on-site SEO (meta tags, title, keywords, etc…) as well.

Don’t overdo it. And being a perfectionist won’t help either. A very informative article with 400-600 words a day is enough for your subscribers to be happy and for search engines to crawl your website and find new content.

When it comes to Internet Marketing or business in general,

the hardest part is making that first move.

That first elusive move or action that has the ability to
turn around your destiny.

Yesterday while I was driving to pick up my girlfriend from
work, I tuned in to a local business radio station.

There was this talk show called "Stupid people succeed
faster". Although it didn't say faster than what, I can only
assume faster than smart people?

Anyway, the guy behind this "Stupid people succeed faster"
talk show is a somewhat well-known local businessman in my
country.

I have heard of his name before, though I forgot where.
Maybe it's through the local magazines or newspapers
portraying his businesses and how successful he is.

The radio show went on to talk about how "stupid people"
with only junior high or high school education, because of
their ignorance, are not afraid to try new things.

These "stupid people" are not going to analyze all the
possible scenarios before they try on something new.

They would just go out there and take action, and if any
problems arise, they just deal with it on a case by case
basis.

Contrast this with the way how "smart people" (you know
those with bachelor's or master's degree) would do things.
These guys would plan ahead and analyze every possible
scenario.

They would not take any action at all unless everything is
planned out carefully and flawlessly.

As you might already knew, nothing is perfect and you can't
expect to embark on something new and don't face any
unexpected problems along the way.

That, in a nutshell, is basically what the radio show is
trying to convey.

I agree with the speaker to a certain extent in that
unexpected problems do happen, and we can't be perfect
trying to plan everything before we actually take any action.

I do, however, disagree that we have to take action without
any planning at all. In my opinion, if you fail to plan, you
also plan to fail.

My view is that you still need to plan what you want to do.

Just don't try to be a perfectionist trying to plan and
analyze every possible scenario before you actually take
action.

This will lead to action-paralysis, and eventually you take
no action at all.

And if you take no action at all, then you achieve nothing!

I was once a perfectionist-wannabe as well. I would over
analyze things down to every last detail.

And you know what, the more I analyze and plan, the more
confused I became.

Fast forward a few years later (which is now) I have finally
learned to take things a little easier and just let
everything flow without much analysis.

It doesn't mean that I don't plan and analyze before I do
something. I still do, it's just to a much lesser extent.

Mind you, I certainly don't want to suffer from brain damage!

I have compiled a list of 10 vital things - from choosing an
expert to instructing your web developer - that every marketer
 needs to consider when undertaking search engine optimisation as
part of their marketing mix.
 
1. Strategy First
Please, don't ask for a full SEO proposal from an agency until
 you have set your strategy. Too often, agencies will respond
with a full proposal, including lots of articles to be created,
 sites to be built and links to be implemented without a clear
strategy.
 
Some sites are more straight forward but others are complex and
 would benefit from asking a couple of agencies to get involved
at the research stage - ask them about the strengths and
 weaknesses of your site, what they think of your competitors,
and what strategic approach they would take with your site.

 Rankings are not the only measure of success! For many years,

 to work out cost per unique browser, cost per click and cost per

BROMONT, Quebec – A Canadian woman on long-term sick leave for depression says she lost her benefits because her insurance agent found photos of her on Facebook in which she appeared to be having fun.

Nathalie Blanchard has been on leave from her job at IBM in Bromont, Quebec, for the last year.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday she was diagnosed with major depression and was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits from insurance giant Manulife.

But the payments dried up this fall and when Blanchard called Manulife, she says she was told she was available to work because of Facebook.

She said her insurance agent described several pictures Blanchard posted on Facebook, including ones showing her having a good time at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party and on a sun holiday.

Blanchard said Manulife told her it's evidence she is no longer depressed. She's fighting to get her benefits reinstated and says her lawyer is exploring what the next step should be.

Blanchard told the CBC that on her doctor's advice, she tried to have fun, including nights out at her local bar with friends and short getaways to sun destinations, as a way to forget her problems.

Manulife wouldn't comment on Blanchard's case, but did say they would not deny or terminate a claim solely based on information published on Web sites such as Facebook.

I get a lot of questions from readers, and the most common one is from people who want to make money online as quickly as possible …. preferably yesterday!

The truth is, if you want to build a business online, that is going to take time.

BUT …

It *is* also possible to find some ways to create some quick cash through affiliate marketing.

With this post I’m going to give you a plan that ANYONE should be able to follow, time and time again, to generate some affiliate commissions, without spending a single penny.

Step #1 - Choose Your Product To Promote

The easiest way to do this is to go to Clickbank.com and sign up for a free account.

Look in the “Marketplace” for different products. It’s divided into 9 categories and 94 sub-categories.

Go through and pick out a product that you want to promote.

(HINT: I usually find the further you dig down into the categories, the less competition there is to promote it online!)

Example: It’s now coming close to the holiday season so people are going to be cooking/baking a lot. I found a “Cooking And Recipes” category in the “Home And Family” section of the marketplace. There are several products here to promote.

I look at the $/sale and %/sale amounts to decide which one to choose. (The higher the values, the better)

I find one product on “restaurant recipes” that is #1 in that category, with a reasonable $/sale amount of $20.

Step #2 - Find Some Good Keywords To Target

We’re going to create some content to submit online as a way to drive free traffic to our affiliate link. But to do so, we want to focus on keyword search phrases that will be easy to rank for in the search engines.

To do this, I use a free keyword tool which you can get at the link below:

1) I input the main keyword “recipes” and hit “Gather Keyword”. This gives me a list of related keywords and the number of daily searches for that term.

2) Clicking the “Gather Data” button returns the number of competing pages in Google, Yahoo and MSN for each of the keywords.

3) My goal is to pick out keywords that have high search volume (minimum of 20 daily searches) and low competition (less than 20,000 competing pages is good as a rough guide)

I find one keyword “Olive Garden Recipe” that looks good with 2,000+ daily searches and only 16,000 competing pages

TIP: If you find a good keyword, try making that your new MAIN keyword and performing the search again …

This gives many more related phrases with even less competition e.g.:

Olive Garden Soup Recipe
Olive Garden Salad Recipe
Olive Garden Bruschetta Recipe

Step #3 - Create The Content

Now you need to create an article or review based around your chosen keyword(s)

Your article should have the keyword in the title, in the first and last sentences, and at least once in every paragraph.

If you sign up to the affiliate program for the chosen product, they will usually have sample articles you can use for ideas.

If you’re really stuck for ideas, you can even go to sites like EzineArticles.com, type in your keyword and see what other people have already written about.

Once you have created your article, use it to create a “lens” (i.e. webpage) at Squidoo.com

At the end of your article on the Squidoo page, place your affiliate link to the product you are promoting.

Step #4 - Submit The Content Everywhere!

Take your article and also submit it to sites like:

EzineArticles.com
GoArticles.com
Buzzle.com
iSnare.com
HubPages.com
Weebly.com
USFreeAds.com
WetPaint.com
Blogger.com
Wordpress.com

At the end of each article, make sure to place a link back to your original Squidoo article/review page.

This is so that when people read your article they will click through to your Squidoo page and then through to your affiliate link.

Step #5 - Bookmark Your Content

Social Bookmarking is a great way to get your content indexed by the search engines quickly and can help it rank higher - therefore giving you more chance of people seeing it.

The site I recommend using is:

SocialMarker.com

Use this site to bookmark your Squidoo page and one or two of the other pages where you submitted your content.

The combination of submitting content, plus bookmarking it can bring you a lot of free traffic - particularly if you picked the low competition keywords.

Once you start getting traffic to your affiliate link, the sales should follow soon!

Step #6 - Rinse And Repeat!

Once you’ve finished with your first keyword, take a new one and create some new content based around that and repeat the process over again!

You can do this for as many products, in as many markets as you like.

So What Are You Waiting For?

This is possibly one of the quickest, easiest and definitely cheapest ways of making money online.

It does take some investment in time and energy to create the articles and submit them, but there is NO such thing as “free money” online.

Anything you do will require an investment of either time or money.

The good thing about this is that once you start seeing results and generating income, you can re-invest your profits (getting content created and submitted for you etc…) so that you spend less of your own time doing it.

So there you have it - a step-by-step plan for quick affiliate marketing.

The hardest part of writing is the first sentence. When you look at the whole project, it seems like an impossible task. That's why you have to break it down into manageable tasks. Think of climbing a mountain. You are standing at the foot of it and looking up at its summit vanishing into the clouds. How can you possibly scale such an immense and dangerous mountain?

There is only one way to climb a mountain ? step by step.

Now think of writing your ebook in the same light. You must create it step by step, and one day, you will take that last step and find yourself standing on the summit with your head in the clouds.

The first thing you have to do, as if you actually were a mountain climber, is to get organized. Instead of climbing gear, however, you must organize your thoughts. There are some steps you should take before you begin. Once you've gone through the following list, you will be ready to actually begin writing your ebook.

Beginning Steps to Writing an ebook

First, figure out your ebook's working title. Jot down a few different titles, and eventually, you'll find that one that will grow on you. Titles help you to focus your writing on your topic; they guide you in anticipating and answering your reader's queries. Many non-fiction books also have subtitles. Aim for clarity in your titles, but cleverness always helps to sell books ? as long as it's not too cute. For example,

Remedies for Insomnia: twenty different ways to count sheep. Or:
Get off that couch: fifteen exercise plans to whip you into shape.

Next, write out a thesis statement. Your thesis is a sentence or two stating exactly what problem you are addressing and how your book will solve that problem. All chapters spring forth from your thesis statement. Once you've got your thesis statement fine-tuned, you've built your foundation. From that foundation, your book will grow, chapter by chapter.

Your thesis will keep you focused while you write your ebook. Remember: all chapters must support your thesis statement. If they don't, they don't belong in your book. For example, your thesis statement could read: We've all experienced insomnia at times in our lives, but there are twenty proven techniques and methods to give you back a good night's sleep.

Once you have your thesis, before you start to write, make sure there is a good reason to write your book. Ask yourself some questions:
- Does your book present useful information and is that information currently relevant?
- Will you book positively affect the lives of your readers?
- Is your book dynamic and will it keep the reader's attention?
- Does you book answer questions that are meaningful and significant?
If you can answer yes to these questions, you can feel confident about the potential of your ebook.

Another important step is to figure out who your target audience is. It is this group of people you will be writing to, and this group will dictate many elements of your book, such as style, tone, diction, and even length. Figure out the age range of your readers, their general gender, what they are most interested in, and even the socio-economic group they primarily come from. Are they people who read fashion magazines or book reviews? Do they write letters in longhand or spend hours every day online. The more you can pin down your target audience, the easier it will be to write your book for them.

Next, make a list of the reasons you are writing your ebook. Do you want to promote your business? Do you want to bring quality traffic to your website? Do you want to enhance your reputation?

Then write down your goals in terms of publishing. Do you want to sell it as a product on your website, or do you want to offer it as a free gift for filling out a survey or for ordering a product? Do you want to use the chapters to create an e-course, or use your ebook to attract affiliates around the world? The more you know upfront, the easier the actual writing will be.

Decide on the format of your chapters. In non-fiction, keep the format from chapter to chapter fairly consistent. Perhaps you plan to use an introduction to your chapter topic, and then divide it into four subhead topics. Or you may plan to divide it into five parts, each one beginning with a relevant anecdote.

How to make your ebook "user friendly"

You must figure out how to keep your writing engaging. Often anecdotes, testimonials, little stories, photos, graphs, advice, and tips will keep the reader turning the pages. Sidebars are useful for quick, accessible information, and they break up the density of the page.

Write with a casual, conversational tone rather than a formal tone such as textbook diction. Reader's respond
to the feeling that you are having a conversation with them. Break up the length and structure of your sentences so you don?t hypnotize your readers into sleep. Sentences that are all the same length and structure tend to be a good aid for insomnia!

Good writing takes practice. It takes lots and lots of practice. Make a schedule to write at least a page a day. Read books and magazines about the process of writing, and jot down tips that jump out at you. The art of writing is a lifetime process; the more you write (and read), the better your writing will become. The better your writing becomes, the bigger your sales figures.

In an ebook that is read on the screen, be aware that you must give your reader's eye a break. You can do this by utilizing white space. In art classes, white space is usually referred to as "negative space." Reader's eyes need to rest in the cool white oasises you create on your page. If your page is too dense, your reader will quit out of it as soon as their eyes begin to tear.

Make use of lists, both bulleted and numbered. This makes your information easy to absorb, and gives the reader a mental break from dissecting your paragraphs one after the other.

Finally, decide on an easy-to-read design. Find a font that's easy on the eyes, and stick to that font family. Using dozens of fonts will only tire your readers out before they've gotten past your introduction. Use at least one and a half line spacing, and text large enough to be read easily on the screen, but small enough so that the whole page can be seen on a computer screen. You will have to experiment with this to find the right combination.

Of course, don't forget to run a spell and grammar check. You are judged by something as minor as correct punctuation, so don't mess up a great book by tossing out semicolons randomly, or stringing sentences together with commas. (By the way, that's called a "comma splice.")

Last of all, create an index and a bibliography. That's it! You've written a book! Now all you have to do is publish your ebook online, and wait for download request from your website visitors.

It was a Friday night in May and Amanda, as she professes often happens, was home alone and on her computer. More specifically, she was on Twitter.

And Amanda was about to leave a tweet that would set in motion a chain of events that would make her the most popular topic on Twitter, that would net her over $11,000.00 in two hours, and make her a case study for how quickly ideas spread via social media channels.

The infamous tweet that started it all was left at 9:15 pm. She stated simply: "i hereby call THE LOSERS OF FRIDAY NIGHT ON THEIR COMPUTERS to ORDER, motherf*cker."

Brilliance.

What happened next was completely unexpected. But before I jump into the story, I should clarify that Amanda is Amanda Palmer, an indie musician that has leveraged Twitter as a platform to engage and delight her fans and followers, which now number over 45,000.

So it should come as no surprise that the above tweet became a rallying cry for her fans and followers on Twitter to join in the spontaneous festivities. Fans quickly chimed in that they TOO were losers AND at home alone on their computers on that Friday night (Amanda clarified that 'losers on their iPhones DON’T COUNT. you have to be at home, sitting on your ass, pref. in sweatpants').

Then they decided they needed a hashtag, so #LOFNOTC was quickly created. A list of demands for the government was quickly agreed upon, such as 'No taxes on coffee, or vodka'. And of course 'Everyone gets a pony' (Because everyone wants a pony).

Someone said that the #LOFNOTC needed a logo, so Amanda quickly scribbled down the logo below, and shared it with her Twitter followers. Someone tweeted that if that logo was on a t-shirt that they'd buy it. Immediately others agree, make that t-shirt, and they'd buy it.

Amanda, stunned that this is happening, puts in a hurried call to her webmaster. She informs him that her one silly tweet has now led to the #LOFNOTC hashtag being the most popular term on Twitter (in the course of an hour). She also tells him that she made a crack about making t-shirts, and now her fans were begged her to sell them to them. So her webmaster quickly threw up a site so her fans could buy the t-shirt with the logo for #LOFNOTC that Amanda had just created.

They sold over 200 in an hour at $25 a pop. Amanda recapped the night's events on her blog the next morning, and they sold another 200 t-shirts. All because of one silly tweet.

This did NOT happen because Amanda is a rockstar. This was not planned, it was spontaneous. It happened because Amanda created something and invited her fans to help her mold that creation and share in the ownership of the finished product.

To share in the ownership. To us this is 'Look what Amanda did', but to every one of the #LOFNOTC that answered Amanda's call, it was 'Look what WE did'.

The Twitaway: An Experiment In Social Media

I admit it: we were a bit slow to recognize the potential of Twitter at SitePoint.

It’s never too late to build a large, loyal Twitter following—if you think outside the box. In this guest post, Matthew Magain from SitePoint shares some tips on how you can grow your Twitter following to more than 10,000 in less than a week.

Sure, a few of us had dabbled with personal Twitter accounts, but we never really acknowledged Twitter as a viable medium for communicating with customers until, well, everyone else was doing it! By the time we decided to jump on board, our preferred username had already been snapped up by an enterprising squatter (we had to settle for @sitepointdotcom). Not the ideal beginnings for building a successful Twitter presence—and more than just a little ironic considering we pride ourselves with being at the cutting edge of the Web!

Despite beginning on the back foot, we were able to attract 13,000 followers in less than a week—an impressive following that surpasses CNN and the New York Times.

Here’s how we did it.

Dangling The Carrot

Everyone loves free stuff. At SitePoint we publish around 10 books in a year (yep, of the dead-tree variety). We decided to make one of our best-selling titles available as a free PDF to anyone who followed us on Twitter within a 14-day period.

It was a somewhat risky proposition for us—it’s both expensive and time-consuming to produce a high-quality book. We were therefore faced with the very real possibility that we might be giving away something of considerable value to thousands of people, only to have them un-follow us immediately afterwards (luckily, this hasn’t happened!).

However, the fact that we offered a free book is only one reason our campaign has succeeded. If you’re thinking of running a similar promotion, here are six tips, based on our own experience:

1. Give It A Name.

Any successful marketing campaign needs to have a catchy name. Before this venture, our marketing manager had jokingly used the phrase “Twitaway” a couple of times around the office, to mean a “Twitter giveaway”. We realized that this was in fact quite a catchy compound, and decided to run with it. We quickly registered the twitaway.com domain, and referred to the Twitaway promotion in all marketing material that went out.

2. Do Your Homework.

We hit a couple of hurdles on the first day we set our campaign live—primarily due to the fact that we weren’t aware of Twitter’s throttling of the number of Direct Messages you can send in a day (as you can guess, we hit our limit pretty quickly).

It is possible to get around this limitation (it requires that you submit a request to Twitter for your account to be whitelisted). If we had done our homework better, we’d have realized this before embarking on such a project. Perhaps you’ll learn from our lesson, so you’re not scrambling desperately to get hold of Twitter support at odd hours, requesting that your request be accelerated in the queue. Not that we would ever dream of doing such a thing…

3. Have a Plan B.

We knew from the beginning that there would be visitors for whom signing up to Twitter would be a friction point. We gave these folks the option of submitting their email address instead of forcing them to sign up to Twitter—as a result, we’ve ended up with 60,000 email addresses as well as our 13,000 Twitter followers (and counting!)

4. Roll Your Own.

We opted to auto-follow every one of our followers, and sent them their download link immediately after following us. Initially we made use of the third party service Tweet Later, but it became obvious early on that auto-follows and Direct Messages were getting dropped.

Luckily, we have some smart developers on the team, and they were able to throw together a custom tool based on the Twitter API that duplicated the auto-follow and Direct Message functionality in about a day. We also added the ability to send mass Direct Messages (so we could send the download link to our existing followers, as well as new ones).

We’re currently running both tools—Tweet Later does the majority of the grunt work, and our custom tool steps in and picks up the crumbs whenever Tweet Later drops the ball, which gives us the added benefit of a crude form of failover.

5. Plaster It Everywhere.

Once our giveaway had launched, we did everything we could to get the word out—we emailed customers who had purchased the print book or who had downloaded sample chapters from sitepoint.com; we blogged about it, posted in our forum, modified our email signatures … everything short of screaming from the rooftops (although I’m pretty sure I saw our marketing manager doing that, too!). Most importantly, our download link encouraged the recipient to help spread the word, so retweets formed a huge part of the viral momentum that gathered.

6. Give It Some Iron.

There’s no point inviting tens of thousands of people to visit your site if your servers aren’t up to the challenge. We’d run similar giveaways in the past, and had our fair share of being slashdotted or dugg. We knew in advance to host our landing page on a scalable, fast infrastructure (read: a cloud computing service such as Amazon) so that this would be a non-issue. And it was.

Conclusion

Regardless of your initial follower count, it’s possible to grow a large Twitter following by giving people real incentive to begin following you—such as an exclusive offer for Twitter followers. How can a business that is already successful in reaching their local market extend their marketing reach online? The good news is that the traditional offline marketing that has always worked so well will still work at least as effectively to promote your online presence. The other side of the coin is that to promote your business online, the old traditions need some updating to keep up with online marketing best practices.

This is always the place to start, because the effectiveness of everything which follows is often dependent on this being done up front. When I say this, I include great content and intuitive navigation as the basis for everything. Only once your site has been optimized for intelligent visitors should you tweak it for search engines, but never at the expense of the former.

Search engines look at things like keyword density and how specifically a page matches a specific search term. Of course this is extremely over simplistic, but nevertheless a worthwhile starting point. By identifying 10-20 key terms you would like search engines to pick up on, and creating specialised pages with relevant information which utilises those terms in the right way, you will start getting much better results once your site has been indexed.

You will find that it is best to use specialised keyword phrases, for example "precision-engineered bolts" is likely to get better placement than a generic term like "engineering parts". You should also work to create a single page for every key phrase you want picked up on, and include the key phrase in the title, meta tags and use all the words in the body of the page at a high density relative to other words. You should also preferably include the key phrase in the page title, as well as the URL of the page, for example, "http://www.mysite.com/precision_engineered_bolts/". Each page should use a different title, specifically based on the key phrase utilised in that page's content.

Your site should really be developed using XHTML and CSS these days, table-based design has numerous technical problems associated with it, and it results in a lower keyword density than the current standards.

Ideally you should use a content management system which incorporates and facilitates all of the above quickly and effortlessly, such as that provided standard with RealmSurfer sites. This will allow you to manage your own content optimization, with a bit of trial-and-error.

2. Linking and indexing

Never use a forum to spam members or submit unsolicited advertising posts -- that just has the opposite effect of destroying your business' credibility. Some forums have a separate advertising section in which it may be appropriate to professionally post information about your services and products. Always make sure that your presence represents a valuable contribution to the community. Stay on topic and be professional, helpful and constructive.

Search engines take many factors into consideration when ranking a site. New sites, for example, don't initially fare well, however you will find they will allocate some credibility weighting to you the longer your site is up and running. The biggest factor though, external to the site itself, is the number of inbound (preferably non-reciprocal) links from other sites, and the context and wording of the referring link, as well as the ranking of the referring page, and referring site. The popularity of those sites plays a big role, as well as how high up in the site's own hierarchy the link is. By way of example, a link from www.news.com.au counts for much more than a link from a very deeply embedded page like www.somesitesomewhere.com/subdirectory/theattic/someoldforgottenpage .

3. Implement online marketing partnerships with high-profile online businesses

This is where you can really benefit if implemented successfully. When I was previously running the e-commerce business unit for a large company, rather than pay high-traffic websites to advertise on their sites, which can be very much untargeted, we offered them a percentage of sales. In other words, we provided them with the banners to promote the service, and implemented simple tracking of where our visitors were coming from, and then paid a percentage of the total revenue to the referrer. This resulted in very low marketing costs to us, and the referring sites started placing more and more emphasis on their side to ensure that we got top placement whenever they were low on paid inventory.

Another effective medium-term strategy is to provide content of value to sites which serve your target market. They benefit from your topical content, you benefit from the exposure and links.

4. Dabble in paid keyword advertising

Only at this point should you actually be starting to pay for online advertising. These forms of advertising, however, allow you to specifically target certain people, which means you get a much better return on investment than simply advertising to everyone. This can take some trial and error to find what works best, but the amount you pay should be less than the amount of business you generate, and should normally include full measurement and reports on a reasonably regular basis, preferably online.

For this purpose, I often suggest starting with Google. They are by far the most popular search engine globally, they have a very good reputation, provide reporting online, and are probably the most likely to produce results initially. Yahoo and MSN also have excellent paid link systems, and they keep getting better all the time. The latest offerings from all three are now also starting to allow targeting to specific demographics, a trend that is likely to become the preferred way to target online audiences once the capabilities for this type of targeting matures.

5. Involve an internet marketing specialist

At this point, you should be starting to see some results, and be in a good position to ask some intelligent questions. Preferably deal only with a business that has a good reputation (ask for client contact details so you can find out how effective they are), and has preferably has been around for at least a few years. They should also provide very detailed reports (ask for examples of these up front), and be able to explain in detail how they go about promoting your site, on which sites they do so, the number of views and clickthroughs per site per day, and how effective each promotion was relative to the next. They should also meet with you at least once a month to review successes and failures and involve you in the decision-making process of where next to promote your business. At least monthly, you should be in a position to evaluate your cost per sale for various promotions, and to change your focus accordingly.

Especially be wary of businesses who claim unrealistically quick results, or base their business mainly only on search engine submission, or use deceptive practices to try and "trick" search engines into ranking you higher. These usually at best produce no value, and can in some cases lead to your site being removed or ranked very low by search engines.

Twitter Account Suspension And Why It Does Not Work

Hands up, everyone who has a Twitter Account!

Now, put your hand down again, if you have ever used Twitter to plug your line of work. (Be honest!)

Lastly, put your hand down if you have NOT read all the rules. (Again, be honest.)

Obviously this is a hypothetical scenario but my guess is, if you were to put these questions to a thousand Twitter users, by the time you had finished there would be very few hands remaining. Unfortunately, according to the rules of Twitter, this would mean you had a room full of spammers.

Before we go any further I should state that I did use Twitter until a few days ago when my account was suspended for spamming. I opened it to be greeted with this message;

This account is currently suspended and is being investigated due to strange activity. If we have suspended your account mistakenly, please let us know. See Suspended Accounts for more information.

Assuming this to be an easily fixable error, I looked into it further until I came to this message;

Your account was suspended for cross-posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts, a violation of our terms of service and the Twitter Rules that we take very seriously. Your account will remain suspended for a minimum of one week; you may petition for reinstatement on or after August 17, 2009.

An obvious and blatant spamming tactic on my part, you may think, but the simple truth is; I only ever had one account. As frustrating as this situation may be for me, personally, it is nothing compared to the frustrations of Twitter, itself.

I have to admit that, according to the rules of twitter (which I have now read), I was not whiter than white when using it. In my short time as an account holder I came to the conclusion that most users (the ones that I was interested in following, at least) were tweeting, either from or about their work, personally posting links and pictures on their page that they believed their followers would be interested in. I followed suit believing this to be a good use of twitter as generally speaking, our work is what people would be most interested in. If Stephen Fry, for example, were to talk about the weather or the lovely cup of tea he was drinking (being extra careful not to mention the company who manufactured it) who would be interested? We want to know about his work because that is what is interesting about him. As for the rest of us mortals, because our jobs may not be as interesting to most as Mr. Fry’s, we look for people in a similar line of work to ourselves to banter with and share information. If we are not to discuss what we do, how are we to find these people?

This could prove a difficult area for Twitter to police. Once you have read the rules on spamming, in particular, you realize that, if all of them were to be upheld to the letter, they would have very few users left indeed.

There is talk of Twitter Business, a service that will allow people to advertize what they do without fear of persecution. But will anyone use this as a social network? More likely, people will only use it if they are looking for a specific service. So, a search engine, then, which only allows the advertiser 140 characters to explain what they do in order to sell their wares. This will leave the advertiser with only one real option; to put up links to somewhere else where he can go into more detail about his product or service. The links would, more than likely, be to a website... Which has to beg the question; Why not cut out the middle man and just use a search engine instead?

This is probably the conclusion most people (and most spammers, for that matter) will come to once the hype dies down a little so lets hope that it is not the way Twitter plans to monetize itself or it will probably have a lot of disappointed paying advertisers on its hands.

So, if Twitter Business doesn’t seem likely to be viable in the long term, we are left with, plain old, Twitter; a social network where people are not allowed to publicize what they do for fear of being suspended.

It does go without saying that none of us enjoy receiving spam and that Twitter has to do something to prevent it, lest people will stop using the service. But, if it is to be trusted by its users, it cannot be suspending them for cross posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts without first checking that these users are actually guilty of the infringement. If they continue to do so then the current suspension policy will ultimately achieve the opposite of its objective.

Though my Twitter account has now been reinstated, I now cannot escape the feeling that trying to rebuild my social network would be, at best, humiliating and at worst, just pointless, knowing, as I do, that Twitter could close it at any moment due to circumstances that are neither my fault nor within my control (if they actually exist in the first place). And so it is for these reasons, I will probably not use my account as much as used to and would certainly not have opened a new one had the original not been reinstated as I (and, I suspect, my erstwhile followers) would have seen this as an admission of guilt.

Much more importantly for Twitter, however; if I were a dyed-in-the-wool spammer, do you think the suspension of one account would offend so badly as to deter me from opening new ones? I would imagine that a real spammer would be back the very day after his first suspension with a virulent vengeance.

In short; the wrongfully convicted may never return whilst the genuine spammers will simply grow two new heads for each one that is severed.

Automating Direct Messages In Twitter? Why Should You?

I am also relatively new to this whole twitter following – even though I have a marketing screen and nice branding. I’m still getting used to it – the whole twitter thing. What I’m not getting used to is the “automated direct messages” that come up at least in 1/3 people I twit follow. I do find them annoying as you might have already experienced as well because they’re not personal. Remember when email came out in like 1999 and was popularizing really fast. It was the “cool” thing, everyone loved email, it was extraordinary and amazing. But in 2002 it was quoted as “time consuming” and even “work”. So it no longer became a personalized message to someone but a form of communicating business messages and work and it became a nuisance to open. Don’t get me wrong automating your messages via email and twitter is a great way to do nothing and have the “system” do the work for you. Do get me right though when I say that being more personal will get you more followers and will keep them.

There is an ongoing wave that is still rising and curling and on that wave Twitter is on top. Although on this rising tidal wave, the people that have direct message are usually affiliating those messages with a website or a “make money from home”, “make $250k in 12 months” and it does get annoying to users who are marketing their business. Do you think those twitter followers read any messages you send them? In my experiences, this is not the case. I have messages other online marketers like myself and even though their direct messages have reached me the first time, I haven’t got my 1st reply or my 2nd reply back from them. The case and point is if you don’t brand yourself to your twitter followers and personalize your messages to them, you are the annoying one.

I’m not saying that Automatic Messages are innately bad.

But obviously its not building your brand and your reputation online – unless of course you just want to have the largest twitter following on the planet earth and you have nothing to market you just want the largest list ever. Good for you, but most people relate to other people who can relate to them back. It’s a reciprocal thing and this goes for your @messages and what you’re doing. In my humble opinion to this Twitter trend as I see it growing steadfast is this: personalize who you are or twitters will not listen to you. You will be a cow lost within the masses. You will be doing what everyone else is doing. Yes in some cases the automatic messages work and you will build leads. As it has worked for me in the past, it ended up getting 2 or 3 leads from twitter solely when I used Twitter strategies to attract more traffic to my website.

Folks on Twitter seem to be against bad marketing as well.

And I truly mean this because recently I was so fed up receiving these messages in my email inbox of irrelevant crap that I turned off all marketing. I don’t even check my direct messages anymore. I do sort through the ones I see as “real” people, but everyone else is just trying to sell you. I think it was Jeffrey Gitomer who said it this the best way: “people hate being sold, but they love to buy”. Case and point again, the folks on Twitter respond to Twitter as a form of Marketing. And just to test this theory before I wrote this article to prove myself right, I added 500 random strangers just from other followers that I have following me back. Out of those 500, only about 200 added me back while another 300 have no idea who I am and will probably never respond back to me. Out of those 200, and all the ones I visited, they are newbie’s with less than 200 followers and are very personalized (I think I visited like 5 profiles). Out of the 200 that added me back about 109 messages were Automatic Messages with “Hi I hope you have a great day” – not very original in my opinion). Or “Hey great to have another follower – check this out www….” – again not very original.

Case and Point.
I think with any new culture in web 2.0, your brand is your power. People can see right through you when they think or they think they know they are “being sold”. Do the automated messages if they work for you, but you won’t see any from me. My content is original, I don’t post content about how you should try this or that website because it’ll make you millions of dollars. You can probably already do that. What I post is what I’m doing. The fish I caught on the weekend, or the photo I took while I was at the beach. This kind of stuff brand the real person in you. Like I said, people relate to people not to what you’re selling.

Tweeples will tell you either how fantastic or fickle Twitter can be - sometimes both. Getting the most out of the service isn't difficult and you can start by culling any spam from your feed and avoiding it in the future.

Don't Be Followed by Spammers
Following thousands, speaking in keywords and sporting no followers (except maybe one or two other spammers); it's quite easy to spot Twitter spammers. Look out for the automatically generated usernames which are often used. For example, "A1C2eQQQ is now following you on Twitter". Make sure to block these types of accounts as soon as possible so they cannot follow you.

Being followed by one of these accounts doesn't mean you'll be seeing their messages, but you don't want to be retweeted by them or be seen in anyway as an easy target for other spam account holders.

Never retweet a spam message or even tweet the name of a supposed spammer, even in jest - this just makes you easier to find.

Avoid Bad Programs and Money Making Schemes
Make sure you take every step to avoid Twitter spam or malevolent attention. It is important that you never give your Twitter username out on questionable third-party sites. You may be tempted by the 'triple your followers' promise, but doing so will inevitably land you on a list of targets.

Don't use auto-follow bots or any other automated programs. An automated email to new followers can be effective in greeting the masses, but Twitter is all about transparency and real conversations. Leave auto-responders to the spammers.

Websites such as Retweet.it promise you more followers, and may deliver, but the value of your tweets will be watered down and your audience may not appreciate your influence and 'unfollow' you.

Choose your Twitter tools carefully. There are many programs and services out there, but some hold more water than others. Here are some handy tools to simplify your life:
• TweetDeck - Twitter browser, compatible with Linux, Mac and Windows.
• Twhirl - Desktop client which uses the Adobe AIR platform, compatible with Mac and Windows.
• TwitterFeed - Made to feed blog posts via RSS into Twitter. Very handy for frequent bloggers.
• TwitterFox - A Firefox add-on with popup notifications.
